Center

Traditionally, the Center is the biggest person on the court for the team and defends the tallest player for the other team. They typically play closest to the basket. They are also known as the ‘5’ or the ‘big man’ of the team.

Some of the best Centers of all time include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’Neal, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Power Forward

Traditionally the Power Forward is the second biggest person on the court for the team and defends the second tallest player on the other team. They play a similar role to the Center but usually have a bit more speed. They usually play closer to the basket, rather than out on the perimeter.

Some of the best Power Forwards of all time include Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Charles Barkley, and Karl Malone.

Small Forward

Traditionally, the Small Forward is smaller than the Center and Power Forward but taller than the Point and Shooting Guards. They typically play the most versatile role on the court. They play both near the basket and out on the perimeter.

Some of the best small forwards of all time include Lebron James, Larry Bird, Kevin Durant, Scottie Pippin, and Julius Erving.

Shooting Guard

Traditionally, the Shooting Guard is the best outside shooter on the floor. They are usually smaller than the forwards and the Center. They also play more off ball as compared to the point guard. Typically, they sit near the perimeter and shoot from the outside.

Point Guard

Traditionally, the point guard is the shortest player on the floor. They are usually the one that has the ball in their hands the most and runs the offense. Typically, they stay on the perimeter and feed the other players on the team.
