The San Francisco Giants drafted Bonds in the second round of the 1982 MLB draft. This was when he was a high school senior. Bonds and the Giants couldn’t work out a contract and he ended up going to college instead. Bonds would subsequently go on to play for the Giants for many years but as his second MLB team. For some additional trivia, the 1982 draft class also featured Bo Jackson, Jose Canseco, Randy Johnson, and Barry Larkin.

2) Where did Bonds play his college baseball?

Bonds played for Arizona State University in college. He ended up graduating in 1986 with a degree in criminology. During his time at Arizona State, the team reached the College World Series in 1983 and 1984. There are rumors that Bonds’ teammates strongly disliked him at Arizona State and even wanted to kick him off the team at one point.

3) Where was Bonds selected in the 1985 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Barry is the son of Bobby Bonds, who was a 3-time All-Star in the MLB. Bobby passed away in 2003 after complications from lung cancer and a brain tumor.

His little brother is Bobby Bonds Jr, who played in the Minors for several years but never made it to the Majors.

His distant cousin is Reggie Jackson, was was a 14-time All-Star in the MLB and a 5-time World Series Champion. Jackson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.

Barry’s godfather is Willie Mays, who was a 24-time All-Star in the MLB and a World Series Champion. He is considered one of the best players in MLB history and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Game in 1979.
