Babe Ruth Trivia Questions And Answers

Here are some more details on the answers (but only read AFTER you have taken the quiz). This will provide you with a bit more context on the questions that you got incorrect.

1) How many times did Babe Ruth win the World Series in his career?

Ruth won the World Series 7 times ( (1915, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1927, 1928, and 1932). The first three came as a member of the Boston Red Sox and the last four came as a member of the New York Yankees.

2) How much money was Babe Ruth sold to the New York Yankees for?

Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees for $100,000 in 1919. As a result, this is when the curse of the Bambino started. That curse remained for 86 years, finally being lifted in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series.

Speaking of that 2004 Red Sox team, make sure to also take our David Ortiz quiz.

3) What jersey number did Babe Ruth wear? (Hint: It is retired by the New York Yankees)

Babe Ruth wore the #3 and it was subsequently retired by the New York Yankees. Ruth also wore #3 on every other team that he played for in his career.

4) Which position did Babe Ruth play for the majority of his New York Yankees career

Babe played outfield for the large majority of his career as a New York Yankee. As a member of the Boston Red Sox, he was also a pitcher.

5) What is Babe Ruth’s real name?

Babe’s real name is George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. He was given the name ‘Babe’ He got the nickname while in his early career with the Baltimore Orioles in the minor-leagues. I think that we can all agree that Babe Ruth sounds better than George Ruth when discussing his legendary status.

6) What year did Babe Ruth play his final MLB game?

Ruth played his final game on May 30, 1935 as a member of the Boston Braves. The story goes that he left during the middle of a game, never to play again.

7) When the Babe Ruth retired, he finished with 714 career home runs, a record that would stand until which year?

Ruth’s record stood until 1974, where he was passed by Hank Aaron. It goes to show you how dominant that Babe was in his career as his record stood for 40 years.

Speaking of home run hitters, you can also take our Barry Bond quiz, which is in a similar format to this.

8) True Or False: Babe Ruth had over 2000 RBI’s in his career

This is true as Ruth finished his career with 2,213 RBI’s. If you got this right, great job as only true baseball nerds would know it.

9) True Or False: Babe Ruth was the AL ERA leader as a pitcher

This is true as Ruth had the lowest ERA in the American League in 1916. Ruth had a record of 23 wins and 12 losses with an ERA of 1.75. Pretty crazy that such a talented hitter was also such a great pitcher.

10) How Many Times did Babe Ruth Win The AL MVP Award in his career?

Babe only won the AL MVP award one time in his career, which will likely come as a surprise. The award did not exist until 1921, which missed some of Ruth’s biggest years as a hitter and pitcher. Ruth won the award in 1923. According to the rules of the award at that time, a player was only allowed to receive the recognition once, which meant only one MVP award for Babe. As a result, it is a bit confusing to follow.

Some Additional Babe Ruth Facts

Here are some additional tidbits about Babe that we wanted to include but couldn’t find a spot for on our quiz. This includes some notes on his childhood and personal life.

Family & Childhood

Babe was born on February 6th, 1895 to Katherine and George Herman Ruth Sr. His dad worked as a bartender at a local tavern and both of his parents were of German-descent.

Babe had 7 siblings but only his sister, Mamie, survived childhood.

Since he was a troublemaker in his youth, his parents sent Babe to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys in 1902. This school is said to be where Babe first picked up a baseball and grew to love the sport. Babe’s biggest inspiration and his favorite teacher was said to be a man named, Brother Mathias. Mathias has been credited with really helping develop Babe’s skills as a player, working with him on fielding and hitting for hours.

Personal Life

In 1914, Babe married Helen Woodford. The couple adopted a daughter named Dorothy in 1922.

In 1929, Helen was killed in a house fire. According to various reports, Babe and Helen were separated but not officially divorced at the time of her death. Helen was apparently living with another man when she passed away.

Three months after Helen’s death, Babe married Claire Merritt Hodgson, who was an actress and model. Claire also had a daughter, Julia, through a previous marriage of her own. After Babe and Claire got married, he adopted Julia.
