1) True Or False: Mario Lemieux won a Memorial Cup in his Junior Career

This is false as Mario Lemieux never won the Memorial Cup. He did make it to the 1984 Memorial Cup as a member of the Laval Voisins but they did not win a game. Ottawa defeated Kitchener 7-2 in the finals to win the Memorial Cup that year.

2) What year was Mario Lemieux drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins?

Mario was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He would subsequently go on to play his entire career for the Penguins. The 1984 draft would feature some other great players, including: Patrick Roy, Kirk Muller, Eddie Olczyk, Gary Roberts, Brett Hull, and Kirk McLean.

3) How many Stanley Cups did Mario Lemieux win in his playing career?

Mario won the Stanley Cup twice in his career. The Pittsburgh Penguins went back-to-back, winning the cups in both 1991 and 1992. In 1991, the Penguins defeated the Minnesota North Stars, 4 games to 2 in the Stanley Cup finals. Mario was also the MVP for that finals. In 1992, the Penguins defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 4 games to 0 in the Stanley Cup finals. Mario was also the MVP for that finals.

This is false as Lemieux ended his career with 915 games played in the NHL. Even though he didn’t hit 1000 games, Mario still finished his career with 1723 total points. Family & Personal Life

  • Mario was born in Montreal to Pierrette, who was a stay-at-home mom, and Jean-Guy Lemieux, who worked as an engineer.
  • Mario has two older brothers, Alain and Richard.
  • On June 26th, 1993 Mario married Nathalie Asselin. The couple has four children: Lauren (born in 1993), Stephanie (born in 1995), Austin Nicholas (born in 1996), and Alexa (born in 1997).

Mario’s Battle With Cancer

  • Mario was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 1993.
  • This forced Mario to miss two months of the NHL season and he had to undergo multiple radiation treatments during these two months.
  • Mario returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup on March 2nd for their game against the Philadelphia Flyers. He ended up scoring a goal and added an assist in a 5-4 loss to the Flyers. The most impressive part of this story is that Mario underwent his final radiation treatment that morning and had to catch a plane to meet the team.
  • Even though he missed two months of the season, Mario still went on to win the scoring title for the 1992-93 season. He compiled 160 points in only 60 games.
  • He founded the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which focuses on the funding of medical research in the cure for cancer.
