Kawhi Leonard Trivia Questions And Answers

Here are some more details on the answers (but please only read AFTER you have taken the quiz):

1) Which team did Kawhi play for in college?

The answer is the San Diego State Aztecs, where he played two seasons for the team.

2) Where is the furthest that Kawhi took San Diego State In The NCAA Tournament in his college career?

Kawhi took SDSU to the Sweet 16 in the 2011 NCAA tournament. They lost to UCONN, who would subsequently go on to win the tournament.

3) Where was Kawhi Leonard selected in the 2011 NBA Draft?

Kawhi was selected 15th Overall by the Indiana Pacers and was immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs. The trade ended up being George Hill for the draft rights to Kawhi Leonard. As a result, this will go down as one of the worst trades in Indiana Pacers history. 2011 was a pretty strong draft with Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, Nikola Vučević, Jimmy Butler, and Isaiah Thomas all getting selected.

4) Kawhi finished 4th in Rookie of the Year voting for 2011-12. Who won the award?

The answer is Kyrie Irving, who won the award over Kawhi. The other names listed won the rookie of the year award but in other seasons.

5) True Or False: The San Antonio Spurs made it to the NBA Finals in Kawhi’s rookie NBA season

Kawhi and the Spurs lost in the Western Conference Finals that year to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder subsequently went on to lose in the finals to the Miami Heat.

Speaking of that Heat team, check out our Lebron James quiz.

6) When was the first season that Kawhi won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award?

The answer is 2014-15 but he also won the award in 2015-16. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team from 2015–2017. Kawhi is likely going to go down as one of the greatest defensive players in NBA history.

7) True Or False: Kawhi won the NBA Finals MVP in 2014 over Tim Duncan

This is true as Kawhi did win the NBA Finals MVP over Tim Duncan in 2014. This came as a result of Kawhi being a monster in the finals that year, helping San Antonio win the Title.

You can also take our Tim Duncan quiz, which is in a similar format to this.

8) True Or False: Kawhi won the NBA Finals MVP before being named to the NBA All Star team

This is true as Kawhi was the finals MVP in 2014 and wasn’t named to the All Star team until 2016. As a result, that is a pretty crazy stat for him to have.

9) True Or False: Kawhi wore #2 for San Diego State University

This is false as Kawhi wore #15 for San Diego State and he switched to #2 in the NBA. I haven’t been able to find any information as to why Kawhi picked #2 for the NBA.

10) Which NBA Team Originally Drafted Kawhi Before Trading Him To The Spurs?

After being selected by the Indiana Pacers, he was traded to the Spurs for George Hill. As a result, the Pacers are likely kicking themselves for the trade.

Some Additional Kawhi Leonard Facts

Here are some extra details about Kawhi that we couldn’t find a spot for on our quiz but wanted to include.

Kawhi went to Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California. His high school teammate was fellow NBA player, Tony Snell.

According to ESPN’s rankings, Kawhi was the 56th highest-rated player coming out of high school in 2009. As a result, we can say that Kawhi was extremely underrated coming into college.

In 2008, Kawhi’s father, Mark, was shot and killed in Compton at the car wash that he owned. Kawhi was only 16 years old and went on to play the next night for his high school basketball team, scoring 17 points. After the game, Leonard reportedly broke down and cried in his mother’s arms.

Kawhi is cousins with Stevie Johnson, who played for the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers.

According to NFL.com, Kawhi was a defensive back and wide receiver in high school. He says that he was good and probably would have gone to the NFL if he stuck with it but hated practice.
