Gordie Howe Quiz: Questions And Answers

Here are some more details on the answers (but please only read AFTER you have taken the quiz):

1) What year did Gordie Howe make his NHL debut?

Howe made his NHL debut on October 16th, 1946 as an 18-year old. The Detroit Red Wings ended up in a 3-3 tie against the Toronto Maple Leafs but Gordie scored one of the goals. Gordie ended up scoring 22 points in 58 games during his rookie NHL season. This was the least amount of points that he would score in his NHL career.

2) True Or False: Gordie Howe scored more than 50 goals in a single NHL season

This is false as Gordie never scored 50 goals in a season. He did come extremely close a few times, including scoring 49 during the 1952-53 season.

3) How many Stanley Cups did Gordie Howe win in his career?

Howe won 4 Stanely Cups in his career as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. These cup wins came in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955. In 1950, the Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers, 4 games to 3. The Red Wings defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4 games to 0 in 1952. In 1954, the Red Wings defeated the Montreat Canadiens, 4 games to 0. The Red Wings defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4 games to 3 in 1955.

4) True Or False: Gordie Howe only played for the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL

This is false as Howe played his final NHL season as a member of the Hartford Whalers. This came during the 1979–80 season after the Whalers joined the NHL. Gordie will obviously be known for his career as a Red Wing but they weren’t his only team!

5) Gordie Howe holds the record for being the oldest player to ever play in NHL. How old was he?

Gordie was 52 years, and 11 days old when he played his final NHL game. No other player in NHL History has played past the age of 48. Howe is also the only player in hockey history to have competed in six different decades (professionally).

6) How many times did Gordie Howe win the Hart Memorial Trophy in his career?

Gordie won the Hart Trophy 6 times in his career (1952, 1953, 1957, 1958, 1960, and 1963). This puts him in second place all-time behind Wayne Gretzky, who won the award 9 times. Howe also won six Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s leading point scorer.

7) True Or False: Gordie compiled more than 100 points in a single NHL season.

This is true as Gordie scored 103 points during the 1968-69 season. This was the only time that he accomplished the feat in the NHL. He subsequently scored over 100 points during two years in the WHA.

8) True or false: Gordie Howe scored 5 goals in a single NHL game.

This is false as Gordie never scored more than 3-goals in a single NHL game.

9) During the 1940s and 1950s, Gordie Howe played with Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay. The line was commonly known as what?

The answer is ‘The Production Line’. All three were subsequently inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

10) What number did Gordie Howe wear for the Detroit Red Wings before switching to #9?

Gordie wore #17 for his rookie NHL season and switched over to #9 after that. This came as a result of Roy Conacher leaving the Red Wings for the Chicago Blackhawks. It is definitely weird to think of Gordie as anything other than #9.
